#GamesOriginMonday – Era: The Consortium

Eleven years ago, Ed started writing Era: The Consortium. That was the first time you would would identify the game we now have. But the roots of the

Six GM’s were asked to run a game of Firefly as part of a 24-hour event, but they decided to come up with their own sci-fi universe instead. In 2008, this team of six GMs put together a sci-fi universe that was somewhat inspired by Firefly. The Orion Incident – a key part of the universe’s history, as well as the titular starship – can actually be traced back to this original 24-hour game!

After university, Ed went off to work and realized that he was unsatisfied and bored without running games, so in 2011 he got together a group of family and friends to play with. This group that he put together and the campaign they ran became what is now known as the Stiletto Unit. During the original 24-hour campaign in 2008, Ed came down with food poisoning and was unable to complete his part of the campaign, so he picked it back up in 2011 with the original run of Stiletto Unit.

Ed’s favourite book to write was The Consortium as it is a compilation of his lifelong love of sci-fi and holds a special place in his heart. His favourite game to GM is Era: Forbidden because it runs with smaller groups and allows you more time to have character development. You can find him running these two games almost weekly on our Discord server (https://discord.gg/6C4H9Cv)!

#GameMasterMonday – Aearon | Shades of Vengeance

It’s #GameMasterMonday here at Shades of Vengeance and this week, we’re shining a spotlight on Aearon, one of the outstanding game masters who works with us here at Shades of Vengeance.

Aearon is originally from Guernsey, and they live with Dot – the cutest cat ever. They started playing Era games in 2020 at Contingency, when they had a free slot and saw our games being played. People suggested they try the Era: The Consortium Time Travel Campaign that Leo was running, and they’ve been hooked ever since.

When they discovered role-playing games, it was like a dream come true. Here was a way to explore different identities in a safe and controlled environment, to step into other shoes and try on different lives. And best of all, it was simple: all you needed was your imagination. Of all the RPGs Aearon has played over the years, their favorite is Consortium. In this game, they find that they’re able to be more themselves than anything else. They can explore different aspects of their personality, and they enjoy being able to inhabit an alternate reality where they have control over their own destiny.

For them, gaming isn’t just a hobby – it’s a way of life. They love being a part of the gaming community and finding new friends who share their interests. Gaming has definitely become a big part of their life and they can’t imagine not having it in their life. It’s a great way to unwind after a long day and it’s also a great way to connect with friends, even if they’re not in the same physical location. They love feeling like they’re part of something bigger and they love meeting new people who share their passion for gaming.

Aearon is an expert at running complex campaigns, and they’re always coming up with new and interesting ways to keep their players engaged. If you’re interested in joining one of Aearon’s games – make sure to check out or Discord server: https://discord.gg/6C4H9Cv

#GameMasterMonday – Leo | Shades of Vengeance

Hey everyone! It’s #GameMasterMonday here at #ShadesofVengeance – this week our #spotlight is on Leo!

He has been part of the team that runs games at Conventions since 2014, and in that time, he’s had some amazing experiences, as well as bringing many to delighted players.

For example, in 2015 he was asked to fill in as a Game Master for a role-playing game called “Era: The Consortium.” He’d never GMed before but accepted the challenge and ended up having a blast. The experience taught him a lot about running successful games, and it’s something he continues to do to this day.

Leo also loves voice acting and has had the opportunity to do some voice work for several audio dramas based on the Era games.

He says it’s been great being able to breathe life into these characters and help bring these stories to life.

If you’re interested in joining us for some games you can join our Discord for FREE: https://discord.gg/Rqa8hdfqMxtop

“For role-playing games, all you need is a rulebook, some dice, and a few friends. We have a Discord server set up where you can find people to play with or get help if you have questions.

“Our community is very welcoming and supportive, so you’ll definitely find a game that speaks to you. We hope to see you soon!”

#GameMasterMonday – Rhea | Shades of Vengeance

Hey everyone! It’s #GameMasterMonday here at #ShadesofVengeance. Our #spotlight this week is on Rhea!

Rhea first joined the Discord server for Era three years ago while they were traveling through London. They had just played their first game of Consortium at a convention and loved it, so when they saw that there was a group of people playing Era games, they knew they had to join them.

They’ve been a GM since November 2020 and have run games weekly throughout the pandemic.

Rhea is originally from Norwich but have also played games in Stockholm and have some experience with Kult.

Now that people are back to work, Rhea likes to run games on the weekends (or weekdays when people are available!), but no matter what or when they’re playing – they always have a great time!

Rhea likes to say “When it comes to role-playing games, there are two main types of players: those who prefer to stick to the rules and those who like to improvise. For the latter group, the best thing about this RPG systems is how flexible it is. You can put your own spin on things and build up your character to act in the way you want.

“GM’ing is like performing and herding cats, but with a little creativity, you can make the game your own. So, if you’re looking for a system that will let you express your creativity, look no further than an Era Game!”

#GameMasterMonday – Doug | Shades of Vengeance

Hey everyone! Welcome to #GameMasterMonday here at #ShadesofVengeance!

This week we’re spotlighting our GM, Doug (aka ShadowsOverScotland!). Doug is a 40-year-old GM from Glasgow and he’s been playing SOV for about 3 years now. He’s an avid fan of Forbidden and has been running a lockdown game of the game for the past few months.

He also attends conventions when he can and is always excited to meet new players and learn about their experiences with the game. Doug is one of our most dedicated and enthusiastic members.

He’s been playing SOV games for just over a year, but he’s already made a huge impact on our community. Doug first joined us at Contingency in 2019, where he quickly became hooked on Era: Empowered. Since then, he’s been an active member of our Discord server, running a weekly game of Era: Forbidden.

Doug is a great GM and a true asset to our community. We’re lucky to have him as a member, and we hope you’ll join us in welcoming him to the SOV family! It’s FREE to play on our Discord – https://discord.gg/Rqa8hdfqMx

For Doug, the community is what makes it and sets it apart from other TTRPG games. The friendly, welcoming, community and the presence at conventions really helped. Along with the community, Doug also thinks that the straightforward system of Era really helped make it. He says “you can do what you want with them to do and have a solid level of integration into the theme of each setting” because you have the freedom to get your character to do what you want, spread points around and have a variety of different powers. Come meet Doug and our other awesome GMS today on our Discord server!

#GameMasterMonday – Andy

Hey everyone! It’s #GameMasterMonday here at #ShadesofVengeance!

This week our spotlight is on our GM, Andy!

Andy is a 38-year-old GM from Felixstowe and he has been playing the SOV games for around 5 years. Andy has been playing table-top RPG games for more than 20 years! He started out playing Warhammer and D&D but now plays a little bit of everything.

Andy enjoys going to gaming conventions with his current group that he runs campaigns with, which is actually where he came across Era: The Consortium at CON-Tingency 5 years ago.

Not only is Andy a GM, he is also the one who came up with the idea for the living campaign for Era: Survival. On our Discord Server, we have a channel titled “Hope Springs”, where the Living Campaign is held. He thought it would be nice to do something on a more personal scale than the Consortium Living Campaign. Survival is a story driven by the players and characters as much as it is the GM – which was Andy’s plan. He pitched the idea to Ed and they both thought it was great fun and a neat idea so they went for it!

Since Andy has such an expansive knowledge of #TTRPG ,we decided to ask him about the learning curve to playing Era games as opposed to others, he said “There’s very little math involved and that’s one of the reasons why I like it. I call it the 11 o’clock test – if you can play the game after 11 PM and still know what to do it’s easy.” Andy wants everyone who is interested in playing and all new players to know “don’t get bogged down with the rules, decide what you want to do and do it. Don’t think of the most productive or best thing to do, do what you want!”

Come meet Andy and our group of amazing GM’s today – you can play games for free on our Discord (https://discord.gg/Rqa8hdfqMx)!
